'Brain Stew' and 'Jaded' are the 10th and 11th tracks of Insomniac respectively. Both songs are oftentimes combined since they are transitional: when 'Brain Stew' ends it segues into 'Jaded'. 'Brain Stew' is more well known than 'Jaded' though, and is sometimes played by itself on both the radio and in concerts. Both were released as a double single on July 3, 1996; this single is the third one from Insomniac.

Both songs were included on Green Day's greatest hits album International Superhits!, in which they are tracks 10 and 11 respectively. However, only 'Brain Stew' was included on Greatest Hits: God's Favorite Band, as the seventh track.

Green Day have performed 'Brain Stew' and 'Jaded' live in almost every concert since the release of Insomniac, before the 99 Revolutions Tour. Afterwards, both songs have been played sporadically. 'Brain Stew' has been played more than 'Jaded' has.[1][2]

Later in their career, Green Day had plans to release another double single, 'Holiday' and 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' from the album American Idiot.[citation needed] Both songs were released as standalone singles but not together as a double single.

Song meaning[edit]

'Brain Stew' was inspired by the narrator's lack of sleep when his son was born. Alternatively, it could be about excessive drug use. The transition from 'Brain Stew' to ”Jaded' can be seen as someone suffering from bipolar. This condition can cause immediate mood swings, hence the slow paced 'Brain Stew' and the very fast-paced 'Jaded'. Billie Joe Armstrong stated that his inspiration behind this song is when his son Joseph, who was an infant at the time, would keep him awake all night.[citation needed]

'Jaded' is about how fast society goes and you have to quickly make your decisions. When you start working, time flies by and your world is always the same until you die (Countdown from 9 - 5, hooray we're gonna die, blessed into our extinction). The narrator obviously hates this kind of lifestyle and takes steps to the side, instead of forward, showing he doesn't want that kind of life. The song sounds very anti-growing older, with a small sense of fear that he won't be able to live the life he wants to.

Other versions[edit]

Track listing[edit]

The 'Brain Stew / Jaded' single features both songs in one track, unlike the album, and 'Brain Stew' as a standalone track. The swear words are censored on both tracks.

The single has two unique B-sides: the original version of 'Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)' (which was later re-recorded for Nimrod), and 'Do Da Da'.

The 'Brain Stew / Jaded' single was later re-released in the Green Day: Ultimate Collectors vinyl box set. The other tracks on the original single were removed and replaced with two other songs from Insomniac, 'Walking Contradiction' and 'No Pride', and a live performance of 'Brain Stew / Jaded' that is from the live EP Bowling Bowling Bowling Parking Parking.

Other versions of the 'Brain Stew / Jaded' single includes one made for promotional use, with just 'Brain Stew / Jaded' and 'Brain Stew' by itself, and the cassette release, which only has 'Brain Stew / Jaded' and the original version of 'Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)' on both Sides A and B.

Music video[edit]

'Brain Stew / Jaded' has a music video, which was directed by Kevin Kerslake, who had previously directed music videos for Nirvana. Both 'Brain Stew' and 'Jaded' have their own segment. This music video was included on International Supervideos!.

The video starts with 'Brain Stew', which is entirely filmed in sepia. In this half, the band lies on a couch being pulled through a landfill with a bulldozer, interspersed with shots of Hula dancers, mealworms, and an old lady with a chalkboard. This half is meant to depict the effects that insomnia has on the brain such as hallucinations. Billie Joe even claimed to be high during the music video's filming to add to the ambiance.

When the 'Jaded' segment begins, the color returns and the band is seen playing 'Jaded' in a fast-cut, wobbly-camera style.

Trivia[edit]

  • Billie Joe Armstrong said he used as many as 10 guitar overdubs to achieve the scratchy dissonant sounds in the later part of 'Brain Stew'.[citation needed]
  • The musical pattern in 'Brain Stew' sounds similar to a lot of songs: Led Zeppelin's 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' starting at the 2:22 mark, Chicago's song '25 or 6 to 4', the chord progression in Papa Roach's 'Last Resort', and the main riff in The White Stripes' 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground'.
  • The band said they were sneezing out sand for 'weeks' after the filming of the 'Brain Stew' music video.[citation needed]
  • One of the people in the 'Thanks To' section of the Kerplunk booklet is 'Brain Stew'.
  • Supposedly, 'Brain Stew' is also a nickname of James Washburn, a long-time friend of the band.
